Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from captain Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple interviews following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "drift around" within the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

But, following the opener made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment after England suffered a loss in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, Stokes said his players had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of something special going into this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435.

This means, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. They're a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They were the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is noise from the outside. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he finished.
