Trump's Woke Alarm Misses Europe's True Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a misguided assessment of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" agendas pose an grave risk to European civilization. Yet, this argument is based on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The true challenge confronting the EU is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Divide Between Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry 13.5% increase for the EU. During this period, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a higher per capita income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Today, roughly 50% of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while only four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Problem

This widening economic gap stems from stronger productivity growth in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology dominance is decidedly American. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at more than $10bn, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This gap raises a pressing question: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does Europe positioned? Most analysts agree it is essentially a contest between two involving the United States and China, with European nations starting at a significant handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Innovation Gap

Several key factors explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic network for funding startups. The EU still lacks a true capital markets union, which caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hinder Europe. A US startup can launch a product under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is divided among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was once met with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, one can find causes for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to advance serious reform. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for sweeping reforms.

Given appropriate policies and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains significant advantages: high-quality workforce, top-tier education systems, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations could trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating next-generation tech, it can still dramatically increase economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a decisive moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, without decisive action to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
