Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Here's a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate the horror genre: Settle in with your significant other and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it might appear like conventional biological terror, but within Together resides a profound contemplation about our choices in loving each other.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a special spark to their roles, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The narrative starts when Millie and Tim relocate from the big city to the country for her career. A familiar story element, sure, but that’s mostly where the conventions cease. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim discover an underground cave. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a strange force begins influencing the duo. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The entire film is a methodically building of scares, interspersing moments of dreamlike terrors, gross (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes during something horrific). The director orchestrates these parts expertly and delivers them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is only the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and removed from his social circle. He dreads the idea of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie refrains from painting Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

The couple confront the type of challenges that come with most partnerships a decade in. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory never feels clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal work together symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a strong argument for staying single. Conversely, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could function as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply look at your partner and say, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can experience today.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu now.
