The megacity Rises to Dangerous Smog Post Festival of Lights

As Tuesday dawned residents of the planet's dirtiest urban center found themselves exposed to extremely polluted air that fell into the "critical" category.

Extremely High Air Quality Levels

Multiple areas of the city registered an air quality index exceeding 500, which represents 10x the safe limit recommended by the World Health Organization.

In some locations, readings of PM2.5 and PM10 reached peaks of 1,800, amounting to 15-20x exceeding safe limits.

Firecracker Prohibition and Current Changes

Beginning in 2020, the government had enforced a complete ban on the sale and use of fireworks during the Festival of Lights due to their substantial impact to the deadly smog that blankets the city as colder weather begins.

Nevertheless recently, the recently formed regional leadership petitioned the highest court to request a relaxation of the ban.

Officials advocated for allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – previously doubted by environmentalists as being only roughly 30 percent reduced emissions – as a middle ground between "cultural practices and ecological concerns".

Judicial Verdict and Reality

Much to the frustration of environmental and health activists, the court approved the appeal, specifying that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be ignited during limited hours throughout the festival.

During the celebrations, there was considerable disregard of the regulated periods across the city, with little monitoring regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the eco-friendly variety.

Numerous monitoring devices throughout the city registered air quality peaking around midnight to extremely hazardous readings observed during Diwali in at least recent memory.

Regional Consequences

The widespread use of fireworks during the festival also initiated a dispute with adjacent Pakistan, with officials in Pakistan's Punjab pointing to worsening pollution levels in their urban centers on contaminants originating in neighboring India following the events.

Persistent Pollution Issue

Alarmingly severe levels of atmospheric toxins in the city have continued as a major problem for more than 15 years, with the condition gradually deteriorating.

Around celebratory seasons, the amount of dangerous particles in the environment has been observed to increase dramatically to significantly exceeding the most severe readings ever recorded in the Chinese city, which was once considered as the world's most polluted urban center.

Various Contamination Sources

The problem in the city is resulting from a combination of various sources including automobile exhaust, airborne particles, development work, rubbish burning and smoke from crop residue ignition in nearby areas of farming communities.

Within these states, rural residents routinely ignite agricultural waste to clear them quickly, producing hazardous smog that then gets trapped over the capital as colder air sets in.

Public Health and Economic Impact

Public health and economic toll on the roughly thirty-three million inhabitants residing in the metropolitan zone is significant, according to multiple studies.

The contaminated air causes increased incidence of nervous system, cardiovascular and lung diseases, and can even lead to malignancies.

Environmental contamination is estimated to be accounting for 10,000 untimely deaths each year in Delhi.
