A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” stated the country's president.
The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose term ended the year before. This project was a hallmark of his administration's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a notable increase of its duties in public projects. They were executed at an accelerated pace, beating forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled persistent apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party called for an urgent halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in total adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these national projects.
